After extensive investigation, they discovered a market for locally produced, customised self-care items in India. Rica, Rajat, Mohit, and Kimi Jain joined together to launch Kimirica. In 2017, they entered into a joint venture with the Canadian company Hunter Amenities, giving the company its full name, “Kimirica Hunter International.” Due to a lack of funding, Rica and Kimi originally intended to launch a retail business, but instead chose to concentrate on the B2B industry. Rica and Kimi followed their goals and started Kimirica Lifestyle when the B2B market took off. The comments we received inspired us to keep working towards our goal of one day opening a store, says Rica Jain. Together, Kimirica Hunter International and Kimirica Lifestyle now generate almost Rs 600 crore in revenue annually.

    Kimi claims that while growing up in a small village close to Indore, she observed her father trading with farmers and eventually learnt how to operate a business. She moved to Indore with her mother after completing her basic education since her grandma was keen to bring her there so she could receive a proper education because she was unable to receive one. Rica was born and reared by her grandma in Indore. She claims to have acquired the fundamentals of managing a retail business from her parents, who eventually launched a bakery after her father left his job as a textile mill worker.Rica wed Rajat in 2009, and Kimi wed Mohit, Rajat’s younger brother, in 2011. The co-sisters’ shared love of business ownership quickly led to their formation of a partnership. Kimi leads the brand experience and holds an MBA in e-commerce, whilst Rica leads quality assurance, system and process optimisation at Kimirica Lifestyle and has a Master’s in Pharmacy in medicinal chemistry. 

    The company sells shampoo, shower gel, lotions, conditioner, soaps, and other bath and body items that are all vegan, as well as vegan skincare items like serums, face water, face creams, sunscreen, and more. Additionally, the company sells a variety of vegan soy candles. According to Kimi, the firm employs 600 people, 80% of whom are women. The brand is present on online marketplaces like Amazon, Nykaa, Flipkart, and Myntra in addition to its own website, where about 75% of sales are made online.

    The journey of their company

    The co-sisters were aware of the difficulties of starting a business because they had founded a successful B2B enterprise. But developing a retail division was still difficult. As they had never offered their items directly to people, Rica remembers having her doubts about the viability of the firm. According to Rica, “After four or five months of starting the brand, we only had 2,500 customers, and the numbers made us more doubt our decision of the retail venture but the good thing is we never lost hope.” She continues, “We had to unlearn a lot and start from scratch to build the brand.” When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2019, the business had already established a kiosk at the Hotel Mariott and a retail space at the Indore airport, leaving it with just internet marketplaces to sell on. The team, however, thinks that the lockout gave them some time to conduct in-depth research to accurately comprehend the market and establish an online presence. The pair thinks that one obstacle to making many sales was the Indian market’s underexposure to premium goods, particularly in Tier-II towns.
